Thyroid Cancer Misdiagnosis - Medical Negligence Solicitors
Cancer of the thyroid usually develops slowly with the first symptom being a swelling in the neck where the thyroid gland is located. There may be other symptoms including difficulty swallowing caused by the tumour pressing on the gullet and windpipe. The function of the thyroid gland is unlikely to be affected whilst the tumour is present and symptoms of an overactive or underactive thyroid are unlikely to be in evidence. In the absence of other more positive symptoms, misdiagnosis amounting to medical negligence is not uncommon.

Diagnosis
Diagnosis of thyroid cancer usually involves :-
Blood Tests - The purpose of blood tests in identifying thyroid cancer relates to establishing the levels of ‘thyroid-releasing hormone’ (TRH) which may be indicative of cancer.
Fine Needle Aspiration & Biopsy - A small needle is passed into the neck swelling (often using an ultrasound scanner for guidance) to take a sample of tissue for laboratory examination.
