Stomach Cancer Misdiagnosis - Medical Negligence
The most common type of stomach cancer that accounts for over 90% of cases is adenocarcinoma which starts in the glandular cells of the stomach lining. Treatment includes surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy and is dependent on the location and extent of the tumour in addition to age and general health. Symptoms include permanent indigestion, frequent burping, loss of appetite, difficulty swallowing, weight loss, bloating, nausea, vomiting, blood in the stools and tiredness due to anaemia caused by bleeding from the wall of the stomach. Many of these symptoms are common with other less serious conditions and initial misdiagnosis of stomach cancer which amounts to medical negligence is not uncommon.

Diagnosis
Diagnosis of stomach cancer is by tests and x-rays and includes :-
Endoscopy - An endoscope is a flexible fibre optic tube with a light at the end used for internal examination and photography of the stomach wall and for collecting samples of tissue for laboratory analysis. Some modern endoscopes are also capable of carrying out an ultrasound scan.
Barium Meal - X-rays are carried out after drinking a radio opaque solution of barium which shows the gullet, stomach and digestive system in detail.
